January Homeschool Days: Decomposers

Decomposers: Life in a Rotting Log – dissection
What’s happening beneath our feet on the forest floor? Students explore the fascinating world of decomposers by examining a real rotting log ecosystem. They’ll observe a variety of organisms—such as redworms, millipedes, beetles, mosses, and fungi—and learn how each plays an important role in breaking down organic matter and recycling nutrients back into the environment.
The program concludes with a hands-on earthworm dissection, allowing students to investigate internal structures and better understand how decomposers function within an ecosystem.
