Overview

Thank you for visiting scienceandhistory.org, the website for the Imagination Station Science & History Museum located in Wilson, N.C. The Imagination Station only collects personal information from visitors to our website who choose to provide their information to us.

The Imagination Station will use any information we collect to improve visitor experience on our website, respond to requests for information, and fulfill purchase requests for gift shop items, program registration, event tickets, and donation submissions.

Website Browsing

The Imagination Station uses Google Analytics to collect and track aggregate information about visitors to our website and how visitors use our website so that we can make improvements to your online experience. The Google Analytics tool uses Java script embedded in our website to collect the following information that cannot be tied to any one individual:

  • The type of device (PC, mobile, or tablet), the internet browser, and operating system (iOS or Android) used to access our website
  • The date, time and length of each visit
  • The approximate location from which our site website was accessed including country, state, and city
  • The number of times pages, files, documents, and links are visited and engaged with
  • The domain names of the websites which refer visitors to our website

By default, Google Analytics will not track anyone visiting our website who is located in the UK while accessing our website.

Social Media

When our website is accessed through a social media service such as Facebook or Instagram, we may have visibility to your profile name and any information made public on each particular social media service. These social media companies may collect and share anonymous aggregate metrics with us regarding use, such as the total number of clicks, shares, and users’ demographics (e.g. age range, gender, location). The use of these social media platforms is governed by the privacy policies of the connected social media company and not by the Imagination Station Science & History Museum. 

If You Send Us Personal Information

The Imagination Station will only collect personally identifiable information which you knowingly and voluntarily provide to sign up for our e-newsletter, register for a program, complete our “Contact Us” form, purchase event tickets, make an online donation, or purchase items in our online gift shop. When you provide this personal information we will respond to your request and may contact you to provide the information or service you’ve requested.

The Imagination Station uses third-party vendors to maintain an email list and process online credit card payments. These third-party vendors will have access only to information you provide that is needed to perform their necessary functions, but may not use your information for any other purpose.

The Imagination Station may provide your information in the following situations: (1) a Federal, State, or local law enforcement agency if the Imagination Station becomes aware of a violation or potential violation of law or regulation; (2) a court or party in a court of Federal administrative proceeding if the Imagination Station is a party or to comply with a subpoena; (3) the Department of Justice or in certain legal proceedings when the Imagination Station, an employee of the Imagination Station, or the United States is a party to litigation or has an interest in the litigation and the use of such records is deemed relevant and necessary to the litigation; (4) a Committee of Congress in response to a formal request; (5) protect the security or integrity of the Imagination Station website and services; and (6) any other person or entity as required by law.

What Information We Collect and Why

We collect information about you during the checkout process in our online gift shop. While you visit our virtual gift shop, we’ll track:

  • Products you’ve viewed and use this information to show you products you’ve recently viewed and related products
  • Location, IP address and browser type for purposes like estimating taxes and shipping costs
  • The shipping address to estimate shipping before you place an order and to ship your package once your order has been placed
  • We’ll also use cookies to keep track of cart contents while you’re browsing our website and to keep track of what you’ve placed in your cart for purchase when you return to our website

When you purchase from us, we’ll ask you to provide information including your name, billing address, shipping address, email address, phone number, credit card/payment details and optional account information like username and password. We’ll use this information for purposes, such as, to:

  • Send you information about your account and order
  • Respond to your requests, including refunds and complaints
  • Process payments and prevent fraud
  • Set up your account for our store
  • Comply with any legal obligations we have, such as calculating taxes
  • Improve our store offerings
  • Send you marketing messages, if you choose to receive them

If you create an account, we will store your name, address, email and phone number, which will be used to populate checkout information for future orders.

We generally store information about you for as long as we need the information for the purposes for which we collect and use it and for as long as we are required or allowed by law. This includes your name, email address, billing, and shipping addresses. We will also store comments or reviews if you choose to leave them.

Who on our team has access

The Imagination Station website administrators and administrative support team have access to the information you provide us. For example, both Administrators and Gift Shop Managers can access the following information to help fulfill orders, process changes to orders, and offer customer support:

  • Order information like what was purchased, when it was purchased and where it should be sent
  • Customer information like your name, email address, and billing and shipping information

Payments

We accept online payments for our virtual gift shop through Stripe, a third-party vendor. When processing payments, some of your data will be passed to Stripe, including information required to process or support the payment, such as the purchase total and billing information.

Registering for Programs, Event Ticket Purchases, and Online Donations

What Information We Collect and Why

We collect information about you when registering for programs, purchasing event tickets, and submitting online donations. When you complete forms related to any of these actions, we may ask you to provide the following personal information:

  • Your name and the names of family members or friends
  • Phone numbers
  • Email address
  • Mailing and billing address
  • Programs or events you register for or purchase tickets for

We use Wufoo powered by SurveyMonkey to manage the information collected to provide services to you and accept necessary information for donation processing. Wufoo does not have the authority to share your personal information with anyone outside of their organization or the Imagination Station administrative staff and support staff for any reason other than what is necessary to fulfill your requested service or accept your generous donation.

Payments

We process payments for programs, event tickets, and donations using PayPal, a third-party vendor. When processing payments, some of your data will be passed to PayPal, including information required to process or support the payment, such as the purchase total and billing information.

Opt-Out and User Control

Customers may opt-out of regular mailings, emails, and rental/exchange of files through contacting customer service for the relevant service. Customer service contact may be done by phone, mail or email options. Please look for the appropriate phone number, mailing address or email address on the related service page within our website or included in the correspondence you received from us.

When using the general contact information, please clearly state the reason you are contacting us so we can take care of your request quickly and appropriately.

Customers can change their email communication preferences by using the unsubscribe link at the bottom of our email newsletter or replying to the email communication you received.

You may also access, update, review, correct, or remove any of the personal information you have given to us by emailing [email protected]. 

Data Retention

We will retain your information for the time necessary to fulfill the purposes outlined in this Privacy Statement unless a longer retention period is required or allowed by law.

Remember that even after you cancel your account, or if you ask us to delete your personal information, copies of some information from your account may remain viewable in some circumstances where, for example, you have shared information with social media or other services. Because of the nature of caching technology, your account may not be instantly inaccessible to others. We may also retain backup information related to your account on our servers for some time after cancellation or your request for deletion, for fraud detection or to comply with applicable law or our internal security or recordkeeping policies. It may not always be possible to completely remove or delete all of your information due to technical constraints or, contractual, financial or legal requirements.

Pages on the Imagination Station website, scienceandhistory.org, may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.) and links to websites outside of our organization.

Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if you have visited the other website. These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website (e.g. YouTube). Links to other websites outside of the Imagination Station organization take you outside of our website’s privacy and security. Websites outside of our organization are governed by the policies specific to those websites and not by the Imagination Station organization. Children and Privacy

The Imagination Station website is intended to be accessible and enjoyed by general audiences. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13 without first providing the parent or legal guardian with notice and obtaining prior verifiable consent. If a visitor known to be a child sends an email to the Smithsonian, we will only use it to respond to the writer and not to create profiles or otherwise retain the information.  

Security

The Imagination Station takes reasonable steps to design and manage our website technology to ensure that the information technology systems, applications, and information technology infrastructure are secure. When you use your credit card for any purchase or donation on our website, that transaction is encrypted using “Transport Layer Security (TLS)” encryption to protect your credit card information when traveling over the Internet. Further, we require credit card processing to be secured based on compliance with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) standards.
